Sex: From Entertainment and Addiction to Healthy Intimacy

Like eating-related addictions, those involving sexual urges stem from what is a normal and healthy part of life. However, once sexually-related behavior becomes less of a choice and more of an uncontrollable behavior, help is needed.

A man with a significant sexual addiction once came to see me. Apparently, his life had gotten so far out of control that his behavior patterns had ruined many otherwise successful relationships. Of course, this does not count the problems of participating in activities that were medically dangerous and even illegal. In his case, he was addicted to employing the services of prostitutes. In fact, he said that he looked forward to the new phone book coming out every year so that he could see what new talent was available. He knew that what he was doing was wrong and that he needed to stop.

As hunger and libido – two of the...

Why Change?

Much has been said about the desire to change. Indeed, this is the topic of many self-help experts, personal coaches, and even professional counselors, psychologists, and other psychotherapists. However, little is ever said about why a person would want to transform.

The first thing that I notice is that there is a universal desire for happiness. While many people will never be content – even if their situation is the envy of many others – generally when a person has something that is causing a high level of dissatisfaction in their life, then they develop an urge to become different. Of course, I am not referring to those compulsions such as greed, anger, lust, envy, jealousy, etc. What I am focusing on is the achievement of feeling of contentment while realizing a mutually satisfying relationship with others – and yourself. Therefore, to be truly happy often means removing...

Procrastination - Someday is not a day of the week

Procrastination - Someday is not a day of the week

" Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task. ~William James

I recently read a blog by Gretchen Rubin whose new book, The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun outlines the year she spent test-driving studies and theories about how to be happier. The blog was entitled: Finish The Projects You’ve Started. Or Call an End to Them.

In the article...

Mark Basch: Baseball Grounds, other ballparks add gluten-free items
04/12/2012

“Buy me some peanuts and a chef’s salad …”

No, going gluten-free at the ballpark doesn’t necessarily have me singing “Take me out to the ballgame.”

But after some disappointing spring training experiences, there is hope for the regular season: The Jacksonville Suns are offering gluten-free hot dogs and beer, and other items, at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Taste Test: Breakfast biscuits get a good response
04/12/2012

Don’t be fooled by the name. Nabisco belVita Breakfast Biscuits are really cookies, but they’re not your run-of-the-mill treat. Nabisco claims the biscuits, which come four to a pack, will fuel your body throughout the morning if you eat them for breakfast with some dairy and fruit.

Members of the Times-Union Consumer Panel tried the Apple Cinnamon Breakfast Biscuits, which are made with whole grain wheat and rye flours, whole-grain rolled oats, cinnamon and dried apples, and most felt satisfied until lunch.

Chicken legs and thighs delicious, easy to prepare
04/12/2012

I’m a leg man, and I’m not talking about my appreciation for George Clooney’s current red carpet sweeper Stacy Keibler.

When it comes to chicken, you can have the breast and I’ll take a thigh and drumstick. Sure, there’s more meat on the breast, but there’s more flavor in the moving parts. At least that used to be the case when yardbirds actually roamed around a barnyard pecking after seeds. But it isn’t my intention to rip factory farming. I’ll save that rant for a three-part series.

Ugly Americans, Etc. [UPDATED]
04/10/2012

Earlier this week, the very conservative National Review Online's John Derbyshire wandered over to TakiMag and gave us some tips on what to tell your kids about African-Americans...
(10a) Avoid concentrations of blacks not all known to you personally.

(10b) Stay out of heavily black neighborhoods.

(10c) If planning a trip to a beach or amusement park at some date, find out whether it is likely to be swamped with blacks on that date (neglect of that one got me the closest I have ever gotten to death by gunshot).

(10d) Do not attend events likely to draw a lot of blacks.

(10e) If you are at some public event at which the number of blacks suddenly swells, leave as quickly as possible.

(10f) Do not settle in a district or municipality run by black politicians.

(10g) Before voting for a black politician, scrutinize his/her character much more carefully than you would a white.

(10h) Do not act the Good Samaritan to blacks in apparent distress, e.g., on the highway.

(10i) If accosted by a strange black in the street, smile and say something polite but keep moving.
I have no doubt that there are plenty of Americans out there who will read these tips and nod and then ask, "So where's the one about the hoodies?"

The National Review Online has wisely distanced themselves from Derbyshire on this matter, but he still remains a contributor.

In related news,  the Miami New Times is reporting that armed Neo Nazis are patrolling and securing the streets of Sanford for the city's white peeps...
"We are not advocating any type of violence or attacks on anybody, but we are prepared for it," [Commander Jeff Schoep of the National Socialist Movement] says. "We are not the type of white people who are going to be walked all over."
I would be willing to bet that Schoep and his followers refer to the Affordable Care Act as "Obamacare."

And they also probably think that Fox News is fair and balanced.

They always do.
