There are those among us who we admire for their ability to perform a particular skill with a high level of expertise. We wish that we could likewise train our mind and body to achieve in such a way. However, we feel that somehow they are special. Perhaps it is because they started young in life. Or, it could be because they had the opportunity to spend thousands of hours perfecting their abilities. This too often leads to feelings of hopelessness as you quickly begin to feel that such performance will always be beyond your grasp.
Teachers and coaches have always attempted to instill model behavior in aspiring scholars and athletes. However, in the 1960’s Richard Bandler and John Grinder came up with a new approach to replicating behavior. The collection of techniques that they – and their intellectual successors – came up with became known as Neuro Linguistic Programming or...

When you look in the mirror, do you see you own worst critic? Yes, I know that you are aware of every failing, mistake, and goof that you’ve made during your life. Well, you are not alone. All of us see that person staring back at us. On the other hand, what you are probably not seeing are all the positive things that you have accomplished in your life. My favorite Christmas movie is It’s a Wonderful Life starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reid. For me the most memorable quote in the movie is when Clarence the angel sent to help the George Bailey, the main character who is played by Stewart. Clarence says, “Each man’s life touches so many other lives. When he isn’t around he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?” To focus on the negative prevents you from contributing positively in this world.
Many of the people who come to see me have become quite good at beating themselves...

Grieving is natural. It is a process that happens when we are adjusting our minds and bodies when we encounter a feeling of loss of someone or something. At its extreme it may be the loss of a loved one, a close friend, or a pet. It can also happen when there is a major disruption in your life. This could occur when a relationship ends, there is a job loss, or some other firmly established routine gets disrupted. It is important to realize that this process has a beginning and an end. When the end never seems to occur, then help may be warranted.
I have often written that we think and exist in terms of patterns. These are patterns of understanding, expectation, and behavior. Physically, they are represented by networks of neurons in your brain and the repeated responses in your body. (We call those responses feelings.) The more that a pattern is recalled or accessed, the...

By Michael Tahmoressi, St. Edwards student and Public Citizen intern Texas can be characterized as a pay to play environment. Contributions Equal Access and Appointments Rick Perry has taken this to a [...]
According to the Fort Worth Weekly, the Keystone pipeline company wants to run roughshod over Texas landowners – and maybe Texas law. When someone from the Canandian company, TransCanada, asked the Crawford family in 2008 about an easement to lay pipeline across their farm on the Texas bank of the Red River, the family wasn’t interested. [...]
Harold Simmons built a West Texas dump for radioactive waste that is bigger than 1,000 football fields, paid out hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions and got a permit for it in Texas, and is now working to fill it. To turn it into a profitable enterprise, the Texas billionaire has now hired lobbyists to urge [...]
MSNBC reports that a scientific paper published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature on Wednesday concluded that during the end of the last Ice Age (12,000 years ago), global temperatures rose after carbon dioxide levels started to rise. This provides even more scientific evidence that there is a connection between warming temperatures and rising carbon dioxide. [...]

Statement of Trevor Lovell, Environmental Program Coordinator, Public Citizen’s Texas Office It is unfortunate that President Barack Obama has decided to ignore news stories in Business Week, the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News and Financial Post, among others, explaining in simple terms how the southern leg of the Keystone XL pipeline will raise gas prices for [...]

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has a proposal to pardon as many as 3,000 environmental rule breakers. Tell the TCEQ that pardoning polluters is no way to make the air and water in Texas cleaner. The TCEQ is changing the rules to allow those with a “poor” record of complying with Texas’ weak [...]

The comment period for the proposed new TCEQ Compliance History rules was extended in large part due to Public Citizen making the public aware that the TCEQ had run test scores on their data from the previous year’s posting but were not willing to release that information to us, the Austin American Statesman or the public.
