Eliminate Stress and Begin Enjoying Life

When you perceive that the difficulty of a situation exceeds your capabilities, then your body goes through a reaction called stress. While in some cases stress may excite and even motivate you to do your best, it can also become a negative factor and challenge your ability to be healthy, happy, and successful in life. In the definition that I just gave you I started off by using the word “perceive.” This means that what is causing your stress – and how you react to it – may not be the result of a reality. In fact, how your brain perceives things is often a result of how your mind was shaped during the formative years in life. Not everyone shares your reactions to the same events. For instance, some people may see a situation as overwhelming and feel a sense of hopelessness. Others will look at the same set of circumstances and get excited as they see challenges that will...

Turning Shyness into Popularity

Occasionally I talk to a person who is excessively shy. They feel very uncomfortable around groups of people as they absolutely are certain that everyone is focused on them – and that it must be because something is wrong with them. This leads to a very stressful situation. Many people who have these feelings have problems sleeping and may even develop numerous stress-related health disorders. When a person suffers from excessive shyness, they often find that they are also limiting their careers and preventing themselves from developing rewarding relationships. Fortunately, for many people this is an issue that can be resolved with outstanding results. My theory is people with such conditions are geniuses when it comes to certain social skills. I know that this sounds ridiculous as excessively shy people normally feel that they are failures in this area. However, essentially the...

Just Can’t Stop Biting my Fingernails

Fingernail biting is a compulsive behavior that is very often started during a person’s pre-teen or teen years. It is normally a type of defensive reaction that occurs when a young person encounters a threatening situation that they cannot understand. While I’ve seen this occur in situations where there has been a significant stress in the home – to include frequent relocations and abuse – it frequently starts when a seemingly simple event occurs.

One example of this involved a young thirteen year old boy who had been chewing his nails since the age of nine. In this case, the young man was in a very normal, loving family. There were no problems such as frequent moving or arguing parents. However, there was a very significant event that occurred back when he was nine. Late one Saturday night he and his father had been sitting on the sofa watching television. After several...

At Coral Landing that honor goes to Ann McDonald, who recently earned the top honor during the facility’s Silly Hat Contest in which 10 residents and four employees participated.

Also known as Miss Party Queen, McDonald captured the top honor with her Mardi Gras-themed chapeaux.

Whetstones sue city over dock
04/06/2012

The Whetstone family filed suit Thursday against the city of St. Augustine, claiming that historical records going back to 1788 prove they own property east of their 36-room motel at 138 Avenida Menendez and therefore may build a 230-foot dock there.

The city has denied that the Whetstones own property east of the Seawall and refused to consider their dock plans.

On behalf of the Esther Whetstone Revocable Living Trust, daughter Virginia Whetstone had filed a dock application with he city’s Planning and Zoning Board in June.

Hastings: Area farmers getting back to basics
04/06/2012

When I was a little girl growing up on Trout River on the north side of Jacksonville a favorite Saturday day trip was to the farmers market on Beaver Street. There, my mama said, they had the best, the freshest fruit and vegetables and shrimp right out the river that morning.

Now the farmers market in those days, some 45 years ago didn’t look much like the ones we have today. But I remember the sights and sounds, the smells all mixed in with a little bit of awe as folks sat around on tin buckets, hawking the fresh boiled peanuts whose aroma punctuated the early morning air.

Michigan spring breakers tell tale of saving First Coast couple
04/06/2012

Pals Luke Vaughn and Cody Decker were having the time of their lives visiting the First Coast on spring break from Michigan.

Since Saturday the two 17-year-olds had been to several beaches, took a side trip to an Orlando water park and had plans for other fun before returning home this weekend.

While they'll have plenty of memories about the good times, their best by far will be a harrowing tale of saving two people from a burning car in Palm Coast Tuesday morning.

Our view: Tourism numbers are looking good
04/06/2012

We don’t need a weather report to tell us it is spring in St. Johns County. The traffic on our roads and the no vacancy signs for overnight lodging, table waits in restaurants and full parking lots and then some at attractions, and packed tour trains do a good job of that. Our visitors convey the good news for our economy with every dollar they spend.
