Affecting insomnia without the use of pills

When trying to understand insomnia, you should consider sleep is from a neurological point of view. In general, a sleep state represents a significant neurological reorganization. This means that many areas of the brain are substantially inactivated and others activated. For instance, the Reticular Activating System, which is located in the brain stem and has a lot to do with conscious awareness. (Also, the brain stem controls breathing, which is why meditators, who consciously modify their breathing, can substantially change their mental states.) When modulating (i.e. inactivating the RAS) the levels of the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-Aminobutyric acid) are changed. GABA subtype A receptors are thus the target when general anesthesia is desired. This is why many physicians prescribe hypnotics (i.e. medications which are used for patients who report poor sleep). Drugs such as...

Just Can’t Stop Biting my Fingernails

Fingernail biting is a compulsive behavior that is very often started during a person’s pre-teen or teen years. It is normally a type of defensive reaction that occurs when a young person encounters a threatening situation that they cannot understand. While I’ve seen this occur in situations where there has been a significant stress in the home – to include frequent relocations and abuse – it frequently starts when a seemingly simple event occurs.

One example of this involved a young thirteen year old boy who had been chewing his nails since the age of nine. In this case, the young man was in a very normal, loving family. There were no problems such as frequent moving or arguing parents. However, there was a very significant event that occurred back when he was nine. Late one Saturday night he and his father had been sitting on the sofa watching television. After several...

Golf as a Mental Sport

It seems that all sports are more in your mind than one would first think. So, it is more than just developing muscles and endurance. If you are going to golf like Tiger Woods, Lee Trevino, or Sam Sneed, you must develop your mind as well. Remaining calm at all times appears to be a critical requirement. However, it is much more than that. Your mind and body are intricately linked. This means that for every aspect of the game from your grip, your swing, negotiating hazards, and your putt, there are corresponding neural networks in your brain that must be developed. Believe it or not, building up these brain capabilities is as critical as picking the right club for a shot.

Your brain affects the four major divisions of your golf came. These are: your tee-off swing, chipping and pitching, getting out of hazards, and finishing a successful putt. Each of these is a unique...
