When you feel that there is absolutely no way that you can cope with or resolve with stressful situation, it is quite easy to go into a panic mode. When feelings of panic are later triggered easily and frequently, you have established a learning in your mind and body. This learned behavior is normally referred to as a panic attach. Even though triggering event may seem illogical, you have trained yourself to react this way. The goal now is to reverse this habitual behavior.
The mature human brain is quite capable of appropriately processing threats. When a potential threat is perceived, the problem-solving part of the brain seeks solutions, selects one, you react, and then the process ends. You are calm again. Think of this as: “I see a snake. I run. And, now I am safe.” When this process does not work smoothly, it could be due to either an inappropriate...

Various techniques such as Tai Chi, Yoga, self-hypnosis, and various forms of contemplative care can help people increase their ability to focus and concentrate. The resulting improvements can help athletes, students, surgeons, and others who will greatly benefit. In order to understand how this works, you have to ponder why our day-to-day mental activity makes it hard for us to concentrate.
Generally, the problem with concentration and focus comes from our brain’s problem- solving process. Our ability to perceive or imagine situations needing resolution leads our brain to begin the process of searching for solutions. While this involves many parts of the brain, in particular it needs the cooperation of the anterior cingulated cortex, which is a section that exists in both halves of the brain and is located just forward of the limbic system. The limbic system is the ancient part of...

Can certain rewards motivate a person to be more successful when attempting to achieve various goals? I work with people who come to me because they desire to reach many different goals such as financial, weight loss, stop smoking, etc. Also, I work with those who have health or behavioral-related goals such as reducing pain, getting relief from fibromyalgia symptoms, and overcoming anxieties and phobias.
At the risk of over simplification, I would suggest this issue can be view in two steps. First, the intention needs to be established. Second, the body needs to realize a corresponding response that feels right (i.e. a reward system).
In order to understand the first element, you would need to appreciate the fact that the human brain naturally anticipates and simulates. The center of both of these activities is the right orbitofrontal cortex, which is just above the right eye....

Mellow Mushroom is coming to Jacksonville’s Avondale neighborhood.
Rumors about Jacksonville’s fourth Mellow Mushroom pizzeria coming to one of the historic neighborhoods have circulated for nearly a year, but owner John Valentino recently confirmed the planned Avondale restaurant.

I’m a leg man, and I’m not talking about my appreciation for George Clooney’s current red carpet sweeper Stacy Keibler.
When it comes to chicken, you can have the breast and I’ll take a thigh and drumstick. Sure, there’s more meat on the breast, but there’s more flavor in the moving parts. At least that used to be the case when yardbirds actually roamed around a barnyard pecking after seeds. But it isn’t my intention to rip factory farming. I’ll save that rant for a three-part series.

Earlier this week, the very conservative National Review Online's John Derbyshire wandered over to TakiMag and gave us some tips on what to tell your kids about African-Americans... (10a) Avoid concentrations of blacks not all known to you personally.
(10b) Stay out of heavily black neighborhoods.
(10c) If planning a trip to a beach or amusement park at some date, find out whether it is likely to be swamped with blacks on that date (neglect of that one got me the closest I have ever gotten to death by gunshot).
(10d) Do not attend events likely to draw a lot of blacks.
(10e) If you are at some public event at which the number of blacks suddenly swells, leave as quickly as possible.
(10f) Do not settle in a district or municipality run by black politicians.
(10g) Before voting for a black politician, scrutinize his/her character much more carefully than you would a white.
(10h) Do not act the Good Samaritan to blacks in apparent distress, e.g., on the highway.
(10i) If accosted by a strange black in the street, smile and say something polite but keep moving. I have no doubt that there are plenty of Americans out there who will read these tips and nod and then ask, "So where's the one about the hoodies?" The National Review Online has wisely distanced themselves from Derbyshire on this matter, but he still remains a contributor. In related news, the Miami New Times is reporting that armed Neo Nazis are patrolling and securing the streets of Sanford for the city's white peeps... "We are not advocating any type of violence or attacks on anybody, but we are prepared for it," [Commander Jeff Schoep of the National Socialist Movement] says. "We are not the type of white people who are going to be walked all over." I would be willing to bet that Schoep and his followers refer to the Affordable Care Act as "Obamacare." And they also probably think that Fox News is fair and balanced. They always do. ****** The National Review Online has canned Derbyshire. . |
