Healthy Eating versus Eating to Survive

As nutrition is so vital to our body’s health, why do so many of us turn this necessity into a problem? Normally, the answer lies in the fact that we have corrupted many of the natural capabilities of our brain. We have learned that eating not only serves as a requirement to provide nutrients to our cells and organs, it has somehow become linked to our stress-fighting defense mechanism. So, how do we transition from eating for stress to once again primarily eating for health? The essential problem is that there is a tremendously close relationship between the parts of our brain that handle our self-preservation regarding our need for nutrition and our self-preservation regarding our need to safeguard our bodies from external threat. Furthermore, this linkage between our eating habits and our other survival needs makes a whole lot of sense. For instance, if we think that our survival...

To Feel Great about Yourself

When you look in the mirror, do you see you own worst critic? Yes, I know that you are aware of every failing, mistake, and goof that you’ve made during your life. Well, you are not alone. All of us see that person staring back at us. On the other hand, what you are probably not seeing are all the positive things that you have accomplished in your life. My favorite Christmas movie is It’s a Wonderful Life starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reid. For me the most memorable quote in the movie is when Clarence the angel sent to help the George Bailey, the main character who is played by Stewart. Clarence says, “Each man’s life touches so many other lives. When he isn’t around he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?” To focus on the negative prevents you from contributing positively in this world.

Many of the people who come to see me have become quite good at beating themselves...

Smoking Causes Short-Term and Long-Term Consequences

It is sad to see middle-age and older people who display the cumulative effects of long-term smoking. Many years of cigar, cigarette, or pipe smoking seems to affect every cell and organ in their body. You can see it in their complexions and hear it in their voices. Those that eventually come to see me, tell me that they have always been aware of the long-term consequences. However, they say that they could never successful quit the habit. Unfortunately, while it is never too late to give up smoking, but the time that we meet, the damage to their body is extensive.

On the other hand, not all of the adverse effects of smoking are long-term. In fact, many of them are immediate. The money spent on tobacco products comes out of their pockets almost daily. At the current price, this digs deeply into the family budget. Additionally, the social stigma that is associated with...

04/19/2012

The tiny shopping oasis in Avondale is quickly becoming Jacksonville’s latest restaurant row. Mayor Alvin Brown to host interfaith breakfast, but not all feel welcome
04/19/2012

The decision to begin hosting what he hopes will be an annual prayer breakfast was an easy one for Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown: “Many of our leaders attend houses of worship. Many people in community look to the faith-based community for help in a lot of areas.”

Other mayors have attended interfaith gatherings, but Brown said it’s important for him to host what City Hall is calling Inaugural Mayor Brown Interfaith Celebration.
