Don’t Let Your Fear of Death Control Your Life

I vividly remember the time that I learned of my mortality. I was probably around four or five years old when I suddenly realized that I was not going to live forever. As I matured and grew older – and having survived a near fatal automobile accident – I decided that I wanted to focus on living rather than constantly working about my demise. Obviously, all of us are aware that life is going to end sometime. However, by choosing to live everyday to its fullest your life can become rich and rewarding.

If death is constantly on your mind, it is time to let these thoughts go. Anticipating any negative outcome such as illness and being the victim of a violent deed or accident may not be within your control. I remember one Eastern religious figure saying that if a problem is under your control then fix it, if not, why worry about it.

Worrying and obsessing about the...

Finding Happiness by Changing your Perceptions of Time

What is happiness? Some would define it in terms of being contented with what you have or are experiencing at the moment. Others would explain it in terms of what they own, where they live, and how much money they make. As a therapist, people frequently tell me that they determine their happiness by how others treat or regard them. Unfortunately, in that case they have completely surrendered their happiness to the whims of others. That is not a condition that I recommend. However, I am now going to recommend that you consider another approach to happiness. Consider your dominant thoughts. Are you constantly ruminating and worrying about something that happened in your past? Or, are you obsessing about an event that may occur in the future? All the while, you are ignoring every passing moment. Just think of all the beauty that you are missing. Perhaps, if you took some time to...

Irritable Bowel Syndrome and mental health

One common problem that I find in Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) patients is that something major has happened in their lives that have been rather unbalancing. For instance, the adult daughter of a 73 year old retired female civil servant suddenly becomes bipolar and needs substantial care even to the point of wearing diapers. Shortly thereafter the mother, who becomes her primary caregiver develops IBS. Note that these destabilizing events are also present in the case histories for fibro sufferers. So, it is no surprise that many patients are diagnosed both with fibro and IBS. There is no known cause for either fibro or IBS. Both are also not considered to be preventable. While there is a strong correlation with the imbalance aspect, whether that is a cause is only a hypothesis at this time. When working with an IBS (or fibro) patient, it is important initially to help them...

Review: new works at Barrister%92s Gallery
05/16/2012

These days we hear a lot about the ?natural world,? but anyone who has spent much time in Louisiana sees aspects of nature that stretch the meaning of the word and provide fodder for the imagination. These paintings by Nikki Crook, Amy Guidry and Monique Ligons further the notion that dreams and fantasies may be the last vestige of wild nature in the modern psyche.…

Watch: Galactic with Mystikal and Mannie Fresh %26quot;Move Fast"
05/16/2012

New Orleans funk outfit Galactic released Carnivale Electricos on Mardi Gras ? an album idea the band has been sitting on a couple years but finally arranged, merging Carnival and regional music from its global traditions, this year. When I talked with keyboardist Rich Vogel before its release, I wrote that "the band looked to the Carnival world ? from the baile funk of Rio de Janeiro to bounce beats blasting from local parking lots, and the places in between ? to weave new elements into Galactic's frequently altered fabric ? updated as New Orleans' music and cultural landscape adjusts its palate."

"What we didn't want to do was 'Galactic plays Latin.'…

James Franco takes a ghost tour
05/16/2012

James Franco seems to be Arianna Huffington's latest addition to her vast collection of human celebrity curios ? or, as she puts it, "fresh takes and real-time analysis from HuffPost's signature lineup of contributors."

Franco, who is shooting a movie here and staying on "Charters" Street, has taken to the cluttered HuffPo salt mine to write about his recent French Quarter ghost tour with "Nana (my trusty hair woman, raised in Japan) and Iris (my production consultant, raised in Mexico)." First, though, he has a note about economic development:

Our driver told us that there are more restaurants in New Orleans now than before Katrina.…

Review: As You Like It
05/16/2012

NOLA Project is once again spinning its magic in an outdoor setting. Shakespeare?s comedy As You Like It (in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden at the New Orleans Museum of Art) is perfectly suited to trees and starlight since much of the play takes place in the mythical Forest of Arden.…

Prison privatization bill probably dead for year, sponsor says
05/16/2012

The Times-Picayune reports from Baton Rouge:

"...the sponsor of a stalled bill that would allow the privatization of Avoyelles Correctional Center was asked whether the measure, House Bill 850, would be brought forward for another vote. Rep. Henry Burns, R-Haughton, said, 'At this moment, my intention is that the bill will probably not move.'"

Legalize Louisiana rallies for marijuana reform tomorrow
05/16/2012

An event note, per Legalize Louisiana: "Do not bring any illegal substance to this rally."

Grassroots marijuana reform campaign Legalize Louisiana has organized a series of statewide rallies tomorrow, from New Orleans to Shreveport. The group's statement is as follows:

The group demands policies creating safe and free access to cannabis medicine, for the promotion of human health in Louisiana; industrial hemp should be utilized to boost our state's economy and the health of her ecosystems; that personal use should be decriminalized, and that commercial use should be taxed and regulated, which will create justice where there is now abuse, and, simultaneously, reduce Louisiana's world-record incarceration rates.…

After walkout, Johnson, Hedge-Morrell absent at joint committee meeting on property demolitions
05/16/2012

City Councilmembers Jon Johnson and Cynthia Hedge-Morrell were both absent from today's Joint Disaster and Recovery/Housing and Human Needs Committee meeting today.

The meeting, a presentation on property demolitions from members of Mayor Mitch Landrieu's administration, was the first since Johnson ? who serves on both committees as a regular member ? and Hedge-Morrell, who serves as an alternate on the Disaster and Recovery Committee ? walked out in the middle of last week's regular meeting, leaving only four members ? one short of a quorum ? for the remainder.…

Why Isn’t New Orleans’ Mayor Supporting Marriage Equality?
05/15/2012

At last week’s U.S. Conference of Mayors, nearly 80 of those in attendance voiced their support for marriage equality. In that number: mayors of places like Lima, Ohio and Hallandale Beach, Florida. New Orleans didn’t make the cut. Now, I like Mitch Landrieu. I like him a lot. He’s one of the smartest men I’ve [...]

Much Of America Still Hates Louisiana (And Our Congressional Delegation Isn’t Helping)
05/15/2012

Many of us bitch and moan about the commenters on NOLA.com. To the site’s credit, it’s doing a better job of moderating these days, but it’s still pretty easy to find racist, homophobic, inflammatory remarks lurking below the fold. I mean, I’m not asking anyone to curtail her right to free speech — if you [...]

Hurricane Irene: Be Prepared (And Please Don’t Blame The Gays)
05/15/2012

Since New Orleans isn’t directly in the path of Hurricane Irene, I haven’t heard as much discussion about the storm and all that she threatens to disrupt as I normally would. But of course, Irene is likely to cause a lot of damage, and at the very least, she’ll put a serious damper on people’s [...]

Louisiana%92s 200 Most Notable People
05/15/2012

We are having a great time celebrating Louisiana's birthday this year. I decided the Bicentennial is a great time to recognize some of the incredible talents, personalities, successes and even some blunders that have come from or through our state.

I developed a list of the 200 most notable people in Louisiana history. It is not necessarily a list of our greatest, most popular or, even, most significant people. It is a compilation of individuals whose influence was felt in Louisiana, but also spread beyond our borders.

Secretary’s Comments
05/14/2012

It is hard to believe that 2012 is already here. When I joined the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries team in 2008 I could not have imagined how much I would enjoy my time here or how quickly the time would fly. True, we have had our share of disasters to work through, but overall, [...]
