What is confidence?

Confidence is a person perceived ability to handle any situation that their life may encounter. This means that there's a constant evaluation as to whether a perceived or imagined reality presents a difficulty or threat that is or is not beyond one's assessment of their capabilities. When a challenge is deemed to exceed capability, then negative stress occurs. When the opposite is true, then one could say the confidence exists.

When considering the role of a psychotherapist, one should consider how they interact with a client or patient who has a rather dysfunctional personality. A healthy personality involves the ability for someone to integrate new experiences into their current patterns of thinking (i.e. values, beliefs, and behavior – which make up their core personality.) When someone fails to integrate new experiences, they could possibly be diagnosed as having a personality disorder to include Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Bullying is a condition or situation where one or more people are involved with aggression that is so excessive as cause extreme psychological stress for others. Unfortunately, it is a fact of life in international affairs, politics, organizational dynamics, and with individuals. By its ubiquitous nature it should be obvious that it has always played a role in our society. This, however, does not mean that we should not be concerned. The predominant problem with bullying is its affect on the victims. When it occurs the recipient must cope and adjust behavior. This can either cause long-term feelings of hopelessness and despair with all of the mental and physical ramifications or they may learn to react by displaying overt resistance – such as standing up to the bully.
