Taking the Fear Out of Flying

Flying to your destination in a commercial aircraft is the safest and one of most popular modes of transportation. The amount of regulations and the level of control exceed that of any other method of getting to your destination. Yet, too many people cannot enjoy flying due to a learned and admittedly illogical fear.

Our brain allows us to anticipate. Often this superior function of the human brain provides us a valuable service. Without it many of the typical functions of everyday life would not be possible. However, since most of our brain and body is meant to react and does not know the difference between reality and fiction, a recurring anticipation of a negative event can lead us to needlessly experience the uncomfortable feeling of events that will most likely never occur. A fear of flying is a prime example.

Anticipation starts a pattern in your brain....

Integrating your Mind and Body for Perfect Health

Ever since the Black Death devastated Europe in the 14th century, the mind and body have been considered two separate and distinct entities. Even today, this duality dominates the practice of medicine – and the practice of psychology. Rarely will a physician inquire regarding a patient’s mental state, lifestyle, or spirituality when they come in to resolve a physical condition. Likewise, a psychologist pays little attention to a person’s medical history when dealing with fears and phobias. Even though there are some welcomed and notable exceptions, unfortunately this situation will not change over night.

Innovative medial and psychological thinkers are focusing more and more on the relationship between the mind and the body. While terms such as the “Placebo Effect” and “all in your mind” are still very much part of a professional’s vocabulary, this is changing. Increasingly...

Increasing your Self-Confidence

Your confidence concerning your ability to handle any task in life has a lot to do with where your mind is at the time. Actually, achieving confidence is quite simple once you understand this simple concept. Think for a moment. Where is your conscious awareness right now? Are you ruminating needlessly about something that happened in the past? Or, are you obsessing about a difficulty that hasn’t even happened yet? When the perceived difficulty of a pending task is considered greater than the perceived capability to handle it, then negative stress occurs. Obviously, this involves how your mind organizes space and time. When regarding the past, if you always focus on your past failure to say or do the right thing, then you are contaminating the present with your inadequacies. On the other hand, if you choose to focus on the times that you were previously successful or the positive...

Couch Talk: Understanding our four-legged companions
04/04/2012

The similarities between humans and animals are striking. We look back at our ancestors’ journey as hunters and gatherers where we traveled in packs, similar to the way in which wolves travel.
