Grieving is natural. It is a process that happens when we are adjusting our minds and bodies when we encounter a feeling of loss of someone or something. At its extreme it may be the loss of a loved one, a close friend, or a pet. It can also happen when there is a major disruption in your life. This could occur when a relationship ends, there is a job loss, or some other firmly established routine gets disrupted. It is important to realize that this process has a beginning and an end. When the end never seems to occur, then help may be warranted.
I have often written that we think and exist in terms of patterns. These are patterns of understanding, expectation, and behavior. Physically, they are represented by networks of neurons in your brain and the repeated responses in your body. (We call those responses feelings.) When feelings of panic are later triggered easily and frequently, you have established a learning in your mind and body. This learned behavior is normally referred to as a panic attach. Even though triggering event may seem illogical, you have trained yourself to react this way. The goal now is to reverse this habitual behavior.

When a potential threat is perceived, the problem-solving part of the brain seeks solutions, selects one, you react, and then the process ends. You are calm again. Think of this as: “I see a snake. I run. And, now I am safe.” When this process does not work smoothly, it could be due to either an inappropriate...

We all have filters that effect how we perceive things that happen in our life. Previously experiences can alter how we address current challenges – sometimes creating a “fictional” situation. Why do two people experiencing the same event react in two different ways? It’s because their conditioning and filters make it a totally different event for each of them.
So how do we look at an event in an objective a way as possible and then “choose” how we will respond? First we need to acknowledge that even though we think we are being “objective”, it is highly likely that we are not. Try to identify filters that you may be applying to the situation.
Have a brainstorm and come up with 10 different “takes” on what you’re going through – even if it is not something you currently...
