Freedom from Mental Anxieties

What happens when someone is experiencing an anxiety? Normally, we associate such an occurrence with distinct reactions in the body. Some people feel like their anxiety must be a heart attack. They find that their pulse increases. They feel a tightness in their chest. Their hands and feet may suddenly go numb. Yes, it may just feel like a heart attack is occurring. Even though it is not, still they are experiencing a miserable situation. Anxieties normally happen as the result of a previous traumatic event. Often this event occurred during their childhood years. At that point the ability of their brain to cope and rationalize had not yet emerged. Therefore, the only mental tools at their disposal involved the part of their brain that is normally associated with short-term memory and the area that is involved with triggering fear. Ironically, the memory of a traumatic event is etched...

Finding Ways to Relax

I have often heard that the key to life is balance. Yes, we spend a lot of time seeking out opportunities and challenges designed to stimulate our minds. Indeed, there are plenty of opportunities for entertainment. The Internet, the seemingly unlimited array of channels that are available through our cable or satellite provider, and even our multimedia cell phones provide an endless supply of thrills and fantasies. Yet, what happens when we fail to balance this adequately with relaxation.

It seems that whether real or inspired by the media the challenges of life motivate us. If our day-to-day existence is mundane and boring, we continue to seek novel experiences until we are satisfied. However, this incessant desire for stimulation may be killing our brains and leading our bodies to premature failure.

When the mind and body are stimulated, certain areas of the...

Change your Mind, Change your Body Image

When I work with bodybuilders, I teach them the relationship between how they conceive the shape of their body and how it actually is. Going further, I show them how by changing their mental image of their body, they can actually accelerate improving their strength, building up muscle mass, and burning off fat. Even though most people are more concerned about losing a few pounds and improving their physical fitness and not winning a bodybuilding competition, these lessons may very well apply to them as well. The brain maintains a map of every organ and cell of our body. When we are ill, a change in our body, such as what happens during an infection, will cause suffering. However, our mind also affects our body. In the event of feelings of elation, fear, or arousal, our body will react. Please note, however, that your body will react equally when you are responding to a perceived...

Hispanic voters crucial to the 2012 campaigns
04/25/2012

Understanding that people with radical ideologies, liberal or conservative, don’t comprise a too significant portion of the constituency, Obama and Romney will need to target and appeal to a wide range of moderates and persons undecided if they wish to be elected to office. This challenge will prove far more difficult than appealing to either extremes [...]
