Don’t Let Your Fear of Death Control Your Life

I vividly remember the time that I learned of my mortality. I was probably around four or five years old when I suddenly realized that I was not going to live forever. As I matured and grew older – and having survived a near fatal automobile accident – I decided that I wanted to focus on living rather than constantly working about my demise. Obviously, all of us are aware that life is going to end sometime. However, by choosing to live everyday to its fullest your life can become rich and rewarding.

If death is constantly on your mind, it is time to let these thoughts go. Anticipating any negative outcome such as illness and being the victim of a violent deed or accident may not be within your control. I remember one Eastern religious figure saying that if a problem is under your control then fix it, if not, why worry about it.

Worrying and obsessing about the...

Happiness Can Start with Appreciation and Gratitude

More than likely you have more to appreciate than you think? I know that for many people times are tough. Too many people are out of work. The Recession has left many of us with a tremendous decrease in income and revenue while our debts and bills remain the same – or are getting worse. However, look around you. If you start a list of everything and everybody that you appreciate in life, you will most likely find that your wealth is much greater than you ever considered.

My favorite Christmas movie is the 1946 Frank Capra movie It’s a Wonderful Life, staring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. In the film, when George Bailey, the main character, finds himself in a terrible financial dilemma he becomes convinced that everyone around him would have been much better off if he had never lived. At the point when he was seriously considering suicide, an angel named Clarence allows...

Smoking Causes Short-Term and Long-Term Consequences

It is sad to see middle-age and older people who display the cumulative effects of long-term smoking. Many years of cigar, cigarette, or pipe smoking seems to affect every cell and organ in their body. You can see it in their complexions and hear it in their voices. Those that eventually come to see me, tell me that they have always been aware of the long-term consequences. However, they say that they could never successful quit the habit. Unfortunately, while it is never too late to give up smoking, but the time that we meet, the damage to their body is extensive.

On the other hand, not all of the adverse effects of smoking are long-term. In fact, many of them are immediate. The money spent on tobacco products comes out of their pockets almost daily. At the current price, this digs deeply into the family budget. Additionally, the social stigma that is associated with...

Health campaign aims to make students ‘health nuts’
05/16/2012

They are everywhere. Plastered to tack boards, flashing on televisions, slipped into napkin holders and floating around on fliers; and they have students talking. NAU Health Promotions decided to use a cartoon squirrel to revamp the social norms campaign this year, which aims to spread awareness regarding healthier habits in unhealthy behaviors. Many advertisements address drug [...]

Hispanic voters crucial to the 2012 campaigns
04/25/2012

Understanding that people with radical ideologies, liberal or conservative, don’t comprise a too significant portion of the constituency, Obama and Romney will need to target and appeal to a wide range of moderates and persons undecided if they wish to be elected to office. This challenge will prove far more difficult than appealing to either extremes [...]
