Getting Away from a Chewing Tobacco Habit

During my military career and while living in the southeast United States frequently I have come upon people who are addicted to dipping snuff or having a piece of chewing tobacco in their mouths. It seems to have become a habit that is encouraged in certain cultures. While there are some that are proud of their habit and feel that the little circle that a tobacco can makes in the back pocket of their jeans is a status symbol, still most people find the habit rather disgusting. Even many addicted users admit this as well.

Unlike smokers, those that chew or sniff tobacco products appear to experience the adverse effects much quicker. Gum or nasal illnesses – to include cancers – often happen quite quickly. Therefore, considering these medical issues and the social stigma related to chewing, many users do successfully stop prior to an addiction setting in. On the other hand,...

Integrating your Mind and Body for Perfect Health

Ever since the Black Death devastated Europe in the 14th century, the mind and body have been considered two separate and distinct entities. Even today, this duality dominates the practice of medicine – and the practice of psychology. Rarely will a physician inquire regarding a patient’s mental state, lifestyle, or spirituality when they come in to resolve a physical condition. Likewise, a psychologist pays little attention to a person’s medical history when dealing with fears and phobias. Even though there are some welcomed and notable exceptions, unfortunately this situation will not change over night.

Innovative medial and psychological thinkers are focusing more and more on the relationship between the mind and the body. While terms such as the “Placebo Effect” and “all in your mind” are still very much part of a professional’s vocabulary, this is changing. Increasingly...

Rapidly Becoming a Master by Modeling Excellence

There are those among us who we admire for their ability to perform a particular skill with a high level of expertise. We wish that we could likewise train our mind and body to achieve in such a way. However, we feel that somehow they are special. Perhaps it is because they started young in life. Or, it could be because they had the opportunity to spend thousands of hours perfecting their abilities. This too often leads to feelings of hopelessness as you quickly begin to feel that such performance will always be beyond your grasp.

Teachers and coaches have always attempted to instill model behavior in aspiring scholars and athletes. However, in the 1960’s Richard Bandler and John Grinder came up with a new approach to replicating behavior. The collection of techniques that they – and their intellectual successors – came up with became known as Neuro Linguistic Programming or...

Construction on State Road 207 multi-use trail continues
04/06/2012

The Florida Department of Transportation announced that it has started working this week on a 2.3-mile long segment of multi-use trail along State Road 207 in western St. Johns County.

The new trail will extend from Armstrong Road, where another trail that is currently under construction will end, to just south of Old State Road 207 in Spuds.

Superior Construction Company Southeast and Ayers Associates have designed and will construct the project’s 12-foot wide asphalt trail with two-foot-wide grass shoulders.

Florida Fair Districts groups release own Senate map
04/06/2012

TALLAHASSEE — The Legislature’s revised Senate redistricting plan went to the Florida Supreme Court on Thursday as three nonpartisan groups also released an alternative map because they say the lawmakers’ do-over still violates new anti-gerrymandering standards.

Attorney General Pam Bondi submitted the Republican-led Legislature’s map nine days after lawmakers passed it but before her 15-day deadline. Democrats accused Republicans of delaying action for partisan purposes.

The Supreme Court, though, wasted no time in setting oral argument for April 20.

Hastings: Area farmers getting back to basics
04/06/2012

When I was a little girl growing up on Trout River on the north side of Jacksonville a favorite Saturday day trip was to the farmers market on Beaver Street. There, my mama said, they had the best, the freshest fruit and vegetables and shrimp right out the river that morning.

Now the farmers market in those days, some 45 years ago didn’t look much like the ones we have today. But I remember the sights and sounds, the smells all mixed in with a little bit of awe as folks sat around on tin buckets, hawking the fresh boiled peanuts whose aroma punctuated the early morning air.

Michigan spring breakers tell tale of saving First Coast couple
04/06/2012

Pals Luke Vaughn and Cody Decker were having the time of their lives visiting the First Coast on spring break from Michigan.

Since Saturday the two 17-year-olds had been to several beaches, took a side trip to an Orlando water park and had plans for other fun before returning home this weekend.

While they'll have plenty of memories about the good times, their best by far will be a harrowing tale of saving two people from a burning car in Palm Coast Tuesday morning.

Our view: Tourism numbers are looking good
04/06/2012

We don’t need a weather report to tell us it is spring in St. Johns County. The traffic on our roads and the no vacancy signs for overnight lodging, table waits in restaurants and full parking lots and then some at attractions, and packed tour trains do a good job of that. Our visitors convey the good news for our economy with every dollar they spend.
