The Difference that Self-Confidence Brings

I want to start out by saying that it is okay for you to read this article. I know that you will get something out of it and that you are capable of reading it in its entirety. Of course, most people already know this. Clearly they don’t need my permission. However, there are others who seem to always doubt that they have the capability – and the right – to face life’s obstacles no matter how small and insignificant. Having a recurring feeling of inadequacy or lack of confidence is not good for your health, happiness, or future self-actualization. In order to understand this, realize that a stressful situation occurs when a person’s perceived capabilities appear to be exceeded by the perceived difficulty of a situation. Your capabilities are normally associated with your self-identity. Yes, based upon who you’ve been told or who you have decided that you are, you have developed a...

3 Essential Steps for Masterful Training

For years I have studied experts in a wide range of endeavors, included sports, science, and the arts, as well as professional trainers. There are three attributes that each of them share. They have developed an exceptional ability to install new information, to increase the depth of their knowledge, and have the ability to trigger superior performance with ease. These three steps apply both to the trainer’s skills as well as to how to accelerate the student’s progress.

My studies have involved two groups of people. The first are those that either started early in life or have dedicated thousands of hours of practice. Someone has been in the training and education for several decades would be included in that group. The second are those people who seem to be able to rapidly acquire and master expert skills. It is this second group that interests me the most. Here are some of...

The Value of a Healthy Ego

Over the past several years too many people have had to cope with the stress of financial difficulties. Very rarely have these situations been the consequence of poor decisions on the part of the affected individuals. Yet, it is so difficult for someone undergoing such stresses and strains to convince themselves that they are not at fault. In our society many have always placed an emphasis on finding oneself. Generally, this meant realizing a sense of self-identity. In other words, we want to find out who we are. Often this leads us to seek answers from religious or other spiritual teachers, our nationality, our occupation or profession, our loyalty toward our favorite sports team or our academic alma mater, and even by identifying with our possessions. But what happens when our sense of self comes under question? It does not matter whether we did or did not cause such discomfort to...

Mark Basch: Baseball Grounds, other ballparks add gluten-free items
04/12/2012

“Buy me some peanuts and a chef’s salad …”

No, going gluten-free at the ballpark doesn’t necessarily have me singing “Take me out to the ballgame.”

But after some disappointing spring training experiences, there is hope for the regular season: The Jacksonville Suns are offering gluten-free hot dogs and beer, and other items, at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Taste Test: Breakfast biscuits get a good response
04/12/2012

Don’t be fooled by the name. Nabisco belVita Breakfast Biscuits are really cookies, but they’re not your run-of-the-mill treat. Nabisco claims the biscuits, which come four to a pack, will fuel your body throughout the morning if you eat them for breakfast with some dairy and fruit.

Members of the Times-Union Consumer Panel tried the Apple Cinnamon Breakfast Biscuits, which are made with whole grain wheat and rye flours, whole-grain rolled oats, cinnamon and dried apples, and most felt satisfied until lunch.

Chicken legs and thighs delicious, easy to prepare
04/12/2012

I’m a leg man, and I’m not talking about my appreciation for George Clooney’s current red carpet sweeper Stacy Keibler.

When it comes to chicken, you can have the breast and I’ll take a thigh and drumstick. Sure, there’s more meat on the breast, but there’s more flavor in the moving parts. At least that used to be the case when yardbirds actually roamed around a barnyard pecking after seeds. But it isn’t my intention to rip factory farming. I’ll save that rant for a three-part series.

Ugly Americans, Etc. [UPDATED]
04/10/2012

Earlier this week, the very conservative National Review Online's John Derbyshire wandered over to TakiMag and gave us some tips on what to tell your kids about African-Americans...
(10a) Avoid concentrations of blacks not all known to you personally.

(10b) Stay out of heavily black neighborhoods.

(10c) If planning a trip to a beach or amusement park at some date, find out whether it is likely to be swamped with blacks on that date (neglect of that one got me the closest I have ever gotten to death by gunshot).

(10d) Do not attend events likely to draw a lot of blacks.

(10e) If you are at some public event at which the number of blacks suddenly swells, leave as quickly as possible.

(10f) Do not settle in a district or municipality run by black politicians.

(10g) Before voting for a black politician, scrutinize his/her character much more carefully than you would a white.

(10h) Do not act the Good Samaritan to blacks in apparent distress, e.g., on the highway.

(10i) If accosted by a strange black in the street, smile and say something polite but keep moving.
I have no doubt that there are plenty of Americans out there who will read these tips and nod and then ask, "So where's the one about the hoodies?"

The National Review Online has wisely distanced themselves from Derbyshire on this matter, but he still remains a contributor.

In related news,  the Miami New Times is reporting that armed Neo Nazis are patrolling and securing the streets of Sanford for the city's white peeps...
"We are not advocating any type of violence or attacks on anybody, but we are prepared for it," [Commander Jeff Schoep of the National Socialist Movement] says. "We are not the type of white people who are going to be walked all over."
I would be willing to bet that Schoep and his followers refer to the Affordable Care Act as "Obamacare."

And they also probably think that Fox News is fair and balanced.

They always do.

The National Review Online has canned Derbyshire.
