For years I have studied experts in a wide range of endeavors, included sports, science, and the arts, as well as professional trainers. There are three attributes that each of them share. They have developed an exceptional ability to install new information, to increase the depth of their knowledge, and have the ability to trigger superior performance with ease. These three steps apply both to the trainer’s skills as well as to how to accelerate the student’s progress.
My studies have involved two groups of people. The first are those that either started early in life or have dedicated thousands of hours of practice. Someone has been in the training and education for several decades would be included in that group. The second are those people who seem to be able to rapidly acquire and master expert skills. It is this second group that interests me the most. Here are some of...

A few years ago the movie The Secret popularized the concept of the Law of Attraction. Pretty much it was saying that if what you hold in your mind will naturally be attracted by some mystical forces. Is this truth or fiction?
Once I pondered that question I tried to find some great work of art, architecture, science, athletics, or business that was achieved without intention or vision. Of course, hard work, practice, and effort were normally part of the equation. However, I could not find one single example of any achievement that did not start with a spark of an idea. The Biblical saying, “Ask and you shall receive” seems to have a lot of merit.
Again, does the idea or concept of merely thinking about an achievement mystically make it appear? Is this like magic created by some wish-granting genie? Frankly, my attitude here is “who really cares?” I...

Anyone who reads my full resume or view my professional signature citation, if and when I list all of my academic degrees, I have more than a few initials after my name. Of course, being in my mid-fifty’s, I have a drawer full of certifications that have associated initials. So the question is: Who cares? In my experience, some of my clients and patients really do care? Others could care less.
One way to simplistically look at this is how a person uses their brain. Some people lead their lives focused on their emotions. How does something make me feel? What does my gut feelings tell me? Others prefer a more intellectual orientation. They spend more time than the first group thinking rather than feeling.
The first group tends to be more focused on both feelings AND identity? They have strong emotionally-laden opinions and a very strong self-identity. (And the primarily vote for...

The monsoons can come none too soon, as Volusia and neighboring counties wither in a seemingly intractable drought.
Over the past year, Volusia County is 14.33 inches short.
“When you look at the rainfall for the last 12 months, there were only two months when we received above-average rainfall, ...
This year is off to a great start with its second major animated film (following, of course, Studio Ghibli’s The Secret World of Arrietty) making quite a splash. Aardman Animations (the studio responsible for the Wallace & Gromit films) brings to life the quirky characters from Gideon Defoe’s bo ...
It was a tough decision, former Deltona Mayor Dennis Mulder's e-mail said.
Mulder is withdrawing from the race for the District 5 seat on the Volusia County Council, and entering the race for District 27 in the Florida House.
Last month, incumbent District 5 County Council Member Pat Northey decide ...
These folks call themselves Tea Party Patriots. I talked with the gentleman getting out of the SUV and he said he believed President Obama is a socialist, a Muslim, that he wasn't born in this country and has done nothing whatsoever to benefit the U.S. since he became president. Therefore, "Obama must go."
My attempt to initiate a rational discussion was unsuccessful.
A Flagler County woman was airlifted to a Halifax hospital after she turned left in front of another vehicle Wednesday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Michele A. Brown, 24, of Bunnell was westbound on Florida 100 about 5:15 p.m. when she started to turn left onto County Road 302. She turned her F150 into the path of an eastbound sport utility vehicle eastbound, the Highway Patrol said.

TALLAHASSEE -- Homeowners who join the state-backed insurance pool after Jan. 1 could see rates more than 10 percent higher than current premiums under a proposal up for debate Thursday by Citizens Property Insurance Corp.’s governing board.
Existing Citizens policyholders are protected from large rate bumps by a statutory 10 percent cap on premium increases — and will continue to be. Under the proposal to be considered Thursday, new policyholders could be charged initial rates far more than similar customers who have already been in the pool.

GAINESVILLE (AP) — As rivers, lakes and groundwater levels plummet in north Florida, officials are pondering placing more stringent regulations on watering and irrigation.
