They are powerful because they employ neurological processes required for learning and survival. However, they use these vital systems in a way that threatens the addict’s health, relationships, and may often end in criminal prosecution and jail time. So, to understand and treat this problem both the patient and the counselor must know how abuse is encoded, triggered, and reinforced.
Our brain participates in a two-level learning system. Generally, learning can be divided into short-term and long-term with each using very different and distinct parts of the brain – and one critical part that both share. The ability to have short-term memory involves perception being predominantly stored in the area called the hippocampus, which specializes in briefly recording what is...

Frequently I hear that speaking in public is the number one fear in America and probably the world. Why is it that people will more likely risk their lives rather than get up in front of a group of strangers or even people who they know well? If this describes you, think for a moment. You become self-conscious and tense. Your blood pressure goes up. Your mind is racing. You are afraid that you won’t remember what to say. You are afraid that you will look like a fool? You even remember your last attempt and have never gotten over that experience.
Fortunately, this does not need to describe your next speaking opportunity. What if every time you got up to speak you felt passionate and energized? How would you feel knowing that you can connect easily with your audience and that they will hold onto every word and gesture? What if your enthusiasm was contagious and your listeners...

More than likely you have more to appreciate than you think? I know that for many people times are tough. Too many people are out of work. The Recession has left many of us with a tremendous decrease in income and revenue while our debts and bills remain the same – or are getting worse. However, look around you. If you start a list of everything and everybody that you appreciate in life, you will most likely find that your wealth is much greater than you ever considered.
My favorite Christmas movie is the 1946 Frank Capra movie It’s a Wonderful Life, staring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. In the film, when George Bailey, the main character, finds himself in a terrible financial dilemma he becomes convinced that everyone around him would have been much better off if he had never lived. At the point when he was seriously considering suicide, an angel named Clarence allows...

These folks call themselves Tea Party Patriots. I talked with the gentleman getting out of the SUV and he said he believed President Obama is a socialist, a Muslim, that he wasn't born in this country and has done nothing whatsoever to benefit the U.S. since he became president. Therefore, "Obama must go."
My attempt to initiate a rational discussion was unsuccessful.
A Flagler County woman was airlifted to a Halifax hospital after she turned left in front of another vehicle Wednesday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Michele A. Brown, 24, of Bunnell was westbound on Florida 100 about 5:15 p.m. when she started to turn left onto County Road 302. She turned her F150 into the path of an eastbound sport utility vehicle eastbound, the Highway Patrol said.

TALLAHASSEE -- Homeowners who join the state-backed insurance pool after Jan. 1 could see rates more than 10 percent higher than current premiums under a proposal up for debate Thursday by Citizens Property Insurance Corp.’s governing board.
Existing Citizens policyholders are protected from large rate bumps by a statutory 10 percent cap on premium increases — and will continue to be. Under the proposal to be considered Thursday, new policyholders could be charged initial rates far more than similar customers who have already been in the pool.

GAINESVILLE (AP) — As rivers, lakes and groundwater levels plummet in north Florida, officials are pondering placing more stringent regulations on watering and irrigation.
