Like eating-related addictions, those involving sexual urges stem from what is a normal and healthy part of life. However, once sexually-related behavior becomes less of a choice and more of an uncontrollable behavior, help is needed.
A man with a significant sexual addiction once came to see me. Apparently, his life had gotten so far out of control that his behavior patterns had ruined many otherwise successful relationships. Of course, this does not count the problems of participating in activities that were medically dangerous and even illegal. In his case, he was addicted to employing the services of prostitutes. In fact, he said that he looked forward to the new phone book coming out every year so that he could see what new talent was available. He knew that what he was doing was wrong and that he needed to stop.
As hunger and libido – two of the...

Let’s face it. Each and everyday we are faced with challenges to which we must adapt. They may involve threats to our survival, obstacles standing in the way of our desire to become happier, or even represent an urge to take one’s musicianship or golf game to the next level. For most of us, our ability to make minor adjustments to our way of thinking does not present much of a difficulty. For others, no matter how hard we try, we just don’t seem to make much progress. In fact, often our efforts seem to make matters worse.
A common question that I often hear is whether self-help efforts are enough or whether a person should seek outside help in the form of a professional coach, medical doctor, or other clinician. Of course, if your efforts are successful, you are doing quite well on your own. You get a cold, get some vitamin C, take a day off work or school, and get plenty of rest....

A few years ago the movie The Secret popularized the concept of the Law of Attraction. Pretty much it was saying that if what you hold in your mind will naturally be attracted by some mystical forces. Is this truth or fiction?
Once I pondered that question I tried to find some great work of art, architecture, science, athletics, or business that was achieved without intention or vision. Of course, hard work, practice, and effort were normally part of the equation. However, I could not find one single example of any achievement that did not start with a spark of an idea. The Biblical saying, “Ask and you shall receive” seems to have a lot of merit.
Again, does the idea or concept of merely thinking about an achievement mystically make it appear? Is this like magic created by some wish-granting genie? Frankly, my attitude here is “who really cares?” I...

Check out what's happening in the NewQuestCity Forums for Arizona .
In an attempt to reduce on-campus driving, the Office of Sustainability, ASNAU and NAU Parking and Shuttle Services are planning on incorporating a rent-a-car service for students by next semester. Along with providing students an alternative to bringing their vehicle to school, the program would contribute to the carbon neutrality plan still in effect from [...]
From the Wall Street Journal. Right now, about three-quarters of homeowners who are deeply underwater on mortgages backed by Fannie and Freddie are still making payments.
Business isn’t being done the same way it was even ten years ago. We have seen amazing advantages in technology in recent years. It is amazing to think of how far we have come in such a short amount of time. It is almost unthinkable to do something by hand or by paper anymore. Everyone [...]
Slavery: a word that stirs many negative feelings in Americans. It has been outlawed in almost every country, yet it still occurs in the United States and many other countries. Human trafficking is modern-day slavery. It is a form of sex slavery that is made up of 80 percent of women and 50 percent of [...]
Three weeks into the outdoor track season, the NAU track and field team has already broken a school record. The women’s 4×100-meter relay squad set not only a school record, but also the record for the Eccles Coliseum in Cedar City, Utah, when the Jacks faced the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah.
NAU’s 1994 record of 46.06 [...]
A bill sent back to the Arizona House of Representatives from the Senate regarding electronic harassment will take longer than expected to reach Governor Jan Brewer’s desk.
Rep. Vic Williams (R – Northwest Pima County) said the bill, HB 2549, has been slowed in response to public opinion.
“It’s slowing down,” Williams said. “We’re listening to the [...]
The similarities between humans and animals are striking. We look back at our ancestors’ journey as hunters and gatherers where we traveled in packs, similar to the way in which wolves travel. Humans and wolves both tended to travel with their families, were interdependent and were wary of outsiders. Other parallels lie in their ability [...]
Recently hired NAU offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello is a traveled man. He has coached at all levels of football and has now brought that experience to the Lumberjacks. He took some time off from getting adjusted to a new program and Flagstaff life to sit down with The Lumberjack to discuss his arrival at NAU, [...]
The Heartland Institute, a Chicago-based non-profit organization, has recently focused on questioning the science of climate change, hosting panels of climate change skeptics and endorsing numerous campaigns that deny climate change as a man-made problem that requires any action.
About a month ago, a GM spokesman called the Heartland Institute “careful and considerate.” What better adjectives [...]
Smiles, jokes and effort may not be what the average spectator would take away from this weekend’s NAU club baseball games against the ASU Sun Devils.
The Sun Devils defeated the Lumberjacks 18–13 on Sunday at Flagstaff High School. ASU won the second game of Saturday’s double-header 20–1 at Coconino High School. The Lumberjacks cruised to [...]
Looking over my notes from a class I took in February with Phoenix real estate lawyer Adam Martinez of Combs Law Group, I thought these items were useful and they might even reflect what Adam said. No SPDS is a red flag for short sale buyers because the seller could very well have filled out [...]
This quick video explores the Scottsdale homes for sale market situation. Scottsdale homes for sale that are bank-owned homes (also called REOs and foreclosures) and short sales have fallen by TWO-THIRDS in the last year! These Scottsdale foreclosures/REOs/bank-owned homes were the major driver of falling prices in Scottsdale during the real estate bust. Now that [...]
Today’s businesses have to be very smart when it comes to their marketing decisions. There is plenty of opportunity to reach potential customers. However, not all of them are as beneficial. Interestingly, search engine optimization proves to be one of the most effective marketing efforts. If you are a business owner, remember this and do [...]

Planning Your Vacation When it comes to planning for the Hollywood bowl there are few things you need to do in order to make this musical experience a [...]
Pinterest, one of the newest social media sites on the Internet, recently changed its terms and privacy conditions after legal experts questioned the possibility of copyright infringement within the expansive picture-sharing database.
The site has gained popularity for its diversity in subjects as well as accessibility. By visiting the homepage, the user can scroll through hundreds [...]
It is no secret NAU basketball produced lower-than-expected results this season, with the men hitting a 16-game losing streak (the worst since 1990) and the women only winning three home games after winter break. While these dismal records are the result of several problems in the system, a new issue has reared its ugly head [...]
In an age of increasing globalization, students may be seeing the importance of international studies more often. At NAU, the opportunity to journey around the world begins right on campus.
The Center for International Education (CIE) offers a variety of international internships, volunteer opportunities and research abroad programs for interested students. These programs allow students to [...]
The face of student representation for NAU at the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) will soon be changing with the introduction of a new student representative.
NAU’s previous ABOR student representative, Jennifer Ginther, ended her term in June and Governor Jan Brewer appointed NAU senior political science major Kaitlin Thompson as her replacement.
Thompson, who will undertake [...]
The NAU bus system has undergone many changes over the past few years. The obvious changes include the new and, at times controversial, “spine” route and the introduction of Mountain Link and Rapid Ride busses. Parking and Shuttle Services have also been working on subtle improvements, such as adjusting the time schedule as well as [...]
Realtor Kristin LaVanway was extremely generous to post her deeply personal experiences while losing her home to foreclosure. She grouped these videos into a “playlist” which tells a moving story and the story ends happy! You really should check it out, How I Lost My House and Kept Smiling. It’s amazing!
Here’s a quick video on Desert Ridge homes and living in the Desert Ridge community of Phoenix. I shot this in January when I was learning how to do live video blogging using my pocket camera and my new 4G Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I uploaded it while out in the field to my Desert Ridge [...]
Stressed out after a long day at work? One of the best things to do to beat stress and relax after a long day is to come home and play a game online. Playing casino games at home is also a great way to learn more about the game in a less intimidating environment than [...]
This past weekend the NAU Ice Jacks competed in its first national playoff tournament as a Division II team. The team packed their bags and jetted over a dozen states to Fort Meyers, Fla., where NAU went 0–3 in the first round and were unable to advance to next round. The Ice Jacks lost Friday [...]
Spring break: a time to lay out on the sunny beaches of Mexico, road trip with your friends to California, or go camping at some faraway fair-weather place. However, there is nothing like being snowed-in (or maybe you were snowed-out) to bring your dreamy vacation to a screeching halt.
Welcome back, NAU students! In typical Flagstaff [...]
“Not for human consumption.”
This is the warning label on products known widely as “bath salts,” a designer drug gaining notoriety among young people. Because the product had a warning label, the drug was legally sold in smoke shops and drug paraphernalia stores until Arizona banned the drug through emergency legislation.
The drug, which can be smoked, [...]
