How to Design Your Own Home!

So you want to design your own home - after all, who is more qualified to know what you want than you, right? But before you start pouring the foundation, make sure you have gone through certain steps.

The first thing to do is to get inspired. Make scrapbook - digital or physical - of things you like about other homes. Keep a track of things you like online. Watch home improvement shows.

The second thing you must do is distinguish between things you "have to have" (like bedrooms!) and "wish list" items (like an 8 person shower!). You can add "wish list" items if budget allows after all the must have items are in.

Start looking at existing home plans to get an idea of plans that might work for you with a little creativity. Draw freehand sketches of what you'd like.

Now is the time to invest in a home design program and start drawing the home to scale. You may find that your rough sketches don't work as planned. At this time, you will hand over your drawing to a professional home designer so that accurate blue-prints can be generated.
