There were 5,488 housing units at an average density of 138.0/km² (357.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 70.79% White, 26.57% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.80% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.04% of the population. There were 4,754 households out of which 23.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.6% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.9% were non-families. 34.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
