As of the census of 2000, there were 6,973 people, 2,768 households, and 1,929 families residing in the town. The population density was 498.6/km² (1,292.4/mi²). There were 3,006 housing units at an average density of 214.9/km² (557.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 71.63% White, 19.96% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.86% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 6.31% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.08% of the population. There were 2,768 households out of which 35.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.1% were married couples living together, 13.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 25.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
