As of the census of 2000, there were 8,018 people, 3,768 households, and 2,053 families residing in the city. The population density was 921.4/km² (2,387.5/mi²). There were 3,922 housing units at an average density of 450.7/km² (1,167.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.70% White, 2.31% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.84% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.31% from other races, and 1.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.19% of the population. There were 3,768 households out of which 23.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.3% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 45.5% were non-families. 37.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
