As of the census of 2000, there were 13,575 people, 4,730 households, and 3,429 families residing in the city. The population density was 387.4/km² (1,003.2/mi²). There were 5,079 housing units at an average density of 144.9/km² (375.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 67.86% White, 14.21% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 14.97% from other races, and 2.06% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 34.08% of the population. There were 4,730 households out of which 36.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% were married couples living together, 14.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% were non-families. 23.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
