Maybe you've started to think about getting back into campaign mode, or maybe you've never been involved in a campaign but you've realized how essential it is to reelect President Obama. Here's a chance for you to plug into the campaign and hear the President live in person — an experience any politically engaged Democratic will long remember.
President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will headline a rally at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus on Saturday May 5. They'll be speaking about 1:30. It's one of the kickoff events as he shifts into full campaign mode.
How can you snag some free tickets? One of the best ways is to sign up to do a phone banking shift tomorrow night. Apparently, those who volunteer a little time will be given special tickets for a close-up section. That might be worth a few hours of your time, eh? Someone I know signed up for a phone bank to get tickets to the Obama campaign-sponsored Red Hot Chili Peppers concert at the House of Blues a few weeks ago. She posted on her Facebook page raving about how much fun she had, how the organizers of the phone bank were great, she had terrific conversations with a lot of people, and she had signed up for more shifts. (Full disclosure: I personally hate to phone bank, but most people are better at it than I am).
If you just want to go,you can RSVP here:
There's plenty of additional information on ways to get involved and to cnnect with other supporters there.
One additional note: although most items are prohibited at such events, you ARE allowed to bring your camera and make a record of an event you will never forget.
http://www.advocate.com/politics/marriage-equality/2012/05/01/ohio-attor...
There's a group called the "Ohio Campaign to Protect Marriage" that's got its undies in a bunch about the fact that attorney general Mike DeWine approved the summary ballot language for Freedom to Marry Ohio to go ahead and start collecting the signatures to place the repeal of the "Defense of Marriage" act and the approval of marriage equality on the Ohio ballot. They've got petitions out on the streets now, working to collect the just over 385,000 signatures they need to do so. They're aiming for the 2013 ballot.
Apparently, the Ohio Campaign to Protect Marriage doesn't want to take its chances at the ballot box, probably alarmed by polls showing that people are becoming less bigoted and homophobic every passing year. They're asking the Ohio Supreme Court to interfere and find the ballot language “not a summary and is not a fair and truthful statement.”
Judge for yourself here:

(You can also sign up to volunteer at this site).
DeWine is urging the court to dismiss the case.
In a response filed Friday, DeWine defended his action and argued that the court has no jurisdiction over what he called a pre-certification process — which the law says is exclusively the domain of the attorney general. DeWine said he certified a “fair and truthful statement of a proposed constitutional amendment.” He also noted that his opinion on the merits of the issue is irrelevant.

The most baffling people to me are those online commenters who parrot the GOP party line about “less government, lower taxes.” Unless they are multi-multi-millionaires (and those guys probably aren’t in online forums spewing blatantly misinformed crap about President Obama’s “higher taxes, more spending”), it’s mystifying why they would think for even a fleeting moment about voting for Mitt Romney. Romney has made it clear that not only would he destroy their livelihoods and economic security without a second thought, but that he doesn’t even really get why this would be a problem.
Case in point: Romney’s appearance this week at Otterbein college in Westerville, Ohio (Is it a coincidence that he spoke at a college in Governor Kasich’s upscale hometown? I suspect not). Romney said many things to a hilariously bored audience of college students (look at the video and chuckle at the stupefied faces — nothing like the excitement Josh “The Empty Suit” Mandel showed when Al Gore spoke at Ohio State University in 2000!). But nothing he said demonstrated that he lives in a different world from most of us than this:
This kind of devisiveness, this attack of success, is very different than what we’ve seen in our country’s history. We’ve always encouraged young people: Take a shot, go for it, take a risk, get the education, borrow money if you have to from your parents, start a business.
http://thinkprogress.org/special/2012/04/27/473096/romney-borrow-money-p...
How many levels of self-delusion are there in that statement? I mean, forget even his flogging of the lie that there is an “attack of success” that is “very different from what we’ve seen in our country’s history.” That’s just flat-out cynical.
But “borrow money if you have to from your parents”?
Once upon a time, WMMS-FM dominated the Cleveland listening area with its mix of market-tailored rock & roll, savvy air personalities, and brilliant marketing & promotion strategies. It sometimes had double the ratings of the next nearest station because it was everywhere and involved in everything — from concerts to ballet to football — so you felt you were not up on what was going on if you didn't listen. And because it broke out so many artists, it was considered one of the most nationally influential rock stations.
But that was a long time ago — back in the ’70s and ’80s. How the mighty have fallen!
http://www.advocate.com/Arts_and_Entertainment/Media/Ohio_DJ_Says_Mans_G...
A station that once had a wide age range of listeners and appealed to women as well as men by not disrespecting them has turned into a cesspool for a certain subset of young males. — and not a very evolved one as you can tell by the story at the link above. Dominic Dieter is one of the jaw-flappers on the Rover's Morning Glory morning drive program.
Speaking during the Rover's Morning Glory show, Dieter was discussing a man who wrote the radio station about his gay daughter.
"You should get one of your friends to screw your daughter straight," Dieter said, according to viewers.
Isn't that special? Isn't he a big, tough guy? Or maybe not. Go look at the photo accompanying the article of black-tank-top-clad Dieter parading his muscles in a gym. Hmmmm ... anyone peeked in this guy's closet lately?
Josh "The Empty Suit" Mandel still doesn't feel that Ohio voters are entitled to know clearly where he stands on issues, even though he is running to "represent" them in the U.S. Senate. In typically evasive fashion, his spokespersons hilariously accuse his opponent Senator Sherrod Brown of taking positions for political gain — never mind that his positions are principled, pragmatic solutions to problems — while twisting around their answers to become partisan attacks.
http://www.cleveland.com/open/index.ssf/2012/04/josh_mandels_press_secre...
Trying to figure out precisely where Mandel stands on issues like the renewal of the Violence Against Women Act or the potential imminent doubling of student loan interest can be a head-scratcher.
A spokesperson for Mandel turns a query about student loan interest into a recitation of GOP talking points about their big bugaboo: "spending" (although it's only a bugaboo when the "spending" benefits ordinary people — tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations is, in fact, "spending" as well).
While the spokesperson said Mandel favors the lower interest rate, he didn't say how Mandel would pay for it. The Republicans in Congress are proposing that rather than making the wealthy pay their fair share, the money to keep student loan interest low be taken from money earmarked for health-care reform — a backdoor way of trying to repeal part of the Affordable Care Act.
Brown has other ideas. According to the Plain Dealer,
To pay for this subsidy, Brown would require certain S corporations to pay the payroll taxes (for Social Security and Medicare) that they now avoid by passing income to shareholders -- in many cases, themselves. Brown and others say that wealthy business owners do this to duck taxes on their earnings.
I probably don't have to tell you why Youngstown's Mercy College School of Nursing took back an invitation to state Rep. Bob Hagan of Youngstown to speak at their graduation Tuesday.
http://www.wkbn.com/content/news/local/story/Hagan-Uninvited-to-Speak-at...
Catholic institutions do not rescind invitations because they learn that a speaker has supported the death penalty, or advocated against access to health care, or voted to strip funding for feeding hungry children — all contrary, in theory, to Catholic teachings.
No. This church has become a one-issue institution and that one issue — opposing women's rights and women's autonomy — overrides everything else it does these days. (OK, technically two issues — it also rails against gay marriage).
We saw this is its recent release of its findings in a lengthy "investigation" into the activities of American nuns, when it announced that it felt they were wasting too much time serving those in need and too little time campaigning against gay marriage, abortion, and the ordination of women. And we see it in the selectivity of the speakers they choose to disinvite to speaker at Catholic institution.
Hagan said on his Facebook page,
I have fought for social justice my entire life and today, I am one disappointed Catholic. After being invited to give the commencement speech at Mercy Nursing School here in Youngstown, I got a call telling me that the Bishop has overruled their invite and they have rescinded the invitation because of some of the political positions I have taken. I am saddened that the work that I have done to feed the poor, clothe the naked, help cure the sick, and to bring an end to the death penalty has fallen on deaf ears.
MOUNT VERNON, Ky. - A Beavercreek man was killed and his wife injured along with two other Ohioans in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 75 in Rockcastle County on Sunday.
DAYTON - About 100 UD students were evacuated from a campus residence hall while university police investigated a suspicious package that was found in the building Monday morning.
TROY - Miami County judges on Monday set trial dates for two men accused of raping one of the men’s adopted children.
So I leave town for a couple of days, I come back and what do you know? News of more Josh Mandel incompetence and arrogance is lurking in my emailbox. It seems like it's impossible to over-estimate his total lack of qualifications to be in office, as well as his lack of honesty. I should have stayed in Pennsylvania (where I learned they really, really, really don't like Rick Santorum).
I mean, we're still recovering from his telling the Plain Dealer that, basically, tough titties if you catch him lying, he's going to keep doing it anyway. Just last week Washington Post writer Greg Sargent spoke about this in a column incredulously titled "New Frontiers in Political Dishonesty."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/post/new-frontiers-in-poli...
Just a year ago, this same paper referred to Mandel as a "young powerhouse." Oh well.
But now, there's more, of course. You can pretty much count on it with an ethical void like Josh Mandel.
http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/politics/treasurer-mandel-under-scru...
"Treasurer Mandel under scrutiny for hiring practices," says the Dayon Daily News, helpfully reminding us in the sub-head:
"Ohio treasurer ran for office criticizing hiring practices of incumbent."
Of course he did. Mandel blew up a few borderline but routine issues in ex-treasurer Kevin Boyce's office into a fake "scandal" he kept flogging in his ads, alongside perpetual reminders that he himself was a former Marine (What he didn't mention were his qualifications to be treasurer. Hmm. I wonder why?)
The DDN recalls Mandel saying during the campaign,
Unlike the current officeholder, I will ensure that my staff is comprised of qualified financial professionals — rather than political cronies and friends — and that investment decisions are based on what is best for Ohioans.
In an attempt to circumvent the will of the voters, more than 300,000 of whom signed petitions to place the repeal of voter suppression bill HB 194 on the ballot in November, the Republicans in the Ohio legislation swooped out of their backroom and, as has been rumored for weeks, threw a grenade into the chamber — SB 295. It repeals HB 194, thereby attempting to make the referendum meaningless.
http://www.progressohio.org/blog/2012/03/senate-democrats-stand-up-for-t...
"This will set a dangerous precedent for future referendums," said Senate Minority leader Eric H. Kearney (D-Cincinnati). "If the General Assembly can repeal a bill that is subject to referendum and then pass the same or similar legislation, it makes the referendum process meaningless. The citizens of this state would no longer have the power to fight hyper-partisan legislation such as last year's Senate Bill 5." ...
"We are willing to work on a bipartisan basis to ensure the fairness and integrity of our elections," said Senator Lou Gentile (D-Steubenville). "However, we are not willing to violate the constitution to avoid a referendum."
Even if the Republicans opted for a straight repeal and nothing more, in order to avoid an embarrassing defeat at the polls, this would be a questionable move. But that apparently is not the case:
http://www.ohio.com/editorial/editorials/sneak-attack-1.285882
I got a strange e-mail from “Chris Redfern” a few weeks ago. I put the parenthese around his name, because it was a general e-mail blast, so it really wasn’t directly from him. I found the message in the e-mail strange though. In the message, Chris Redfern, is asking for donations to the Ohio Democratic Party to help him “expose the right-wing.”
Chris Redfern is working on exposing the right?
I’ve been following Chris Redfern for the last year on his Twitter account. After the losses Democrats suffered in 2010, I’ve been hoping he would step up. I’ve been hoping he would become the much-needed persuasive voice for the Democrats in Ohio. But after a full year, I would have to say that Chris has been a miserable failure.
For the most part, from following Chris on Twitter, he predominately babbles about his “Raiders, Irish, A's and Falcons.” He’ll discuss the Miller Boat Ferry and whether it’s running or not. I understand that he’s enjoyed some nice sunsets while wandering around on the Lake Erie Islands.
And that’s a huge problem with Chris Redfern.
Over the past year, he seems to believe that Ohio consists of Ottawa County. Based on his Twitter posts the majority of his travel revolves around Ottawa. I think one of the only panel discussions he did regarding SB5 was in that area. Chris Redfern needed to be everywhere last year. He needed to realize that he is the counter balance to John Kasich.
Exposing the right-wing
Ok, so I will admit that Chris does send out a tweet every now and then that challenges the Republicans. He’ll send a snarky comment to John Kasich’s Twitter account. He’ll do the same to the media. For the most part though, he’s regurgitating information, and overall, he’s ignored.
So I was walking in the door just a little while ago, and I didn't even have time to take off my coat when the phone started ringing.
It was a recording. But before I could hang up, a pleasantly neutral, young-sounding male voice asked "Are you a registered voter?"
OK, I figured I would see what this was about. The recording asked if I was likely to vote in November, if I was excited about the election and if I felt I was well-informed about it. Absolutely, absolutely, and absolutely!
Then it asked me if I approved of Sherrod Brown. Well, of course. Hit one if you approve, hit two if you don't.
Then it asked me if I approved of Josh Mandel.
Ha ha. I hit that number two button so hard it's a wonder it didn't break.
It followed up by asking if I considered myself informed about the Independent Payment Advisory Board. Pretty much. Did I approve of it? Sure.
And then it asked if I had seen the ad with Pat Boone attacking Sherrod Brown for supporting it. I haven't seen it on TV but I guess seeing it online counts, doesn't it? The next question was if this ad made me feel more favorable toward it, less favorably, or didn't make a goddamn bit of difference because I don't give a rat's ass what Pat Boone thinks.
OK, it wasn't worded quite like that but that was the basic idea, and my choice.
It also asked who I voted for in 2008, who I voted for, and some other basic ID type stuff. The tone of the interview was neutral and not at all leading. I wonder if anyone else got this call or has any idea who is doing this. It didn't feel like a push poll to me.
