The area where Raytown now lies was added to the state of Missouri at a cost of $800 by a treaty signed in 1826. Jackson County, named after President Andrew Jackson, was formed in 1827. A large area of the county, Township 49, was accidentally not offered for sale when the other townships were, and so was called "The Lost Township". People moved into the township and squatted until the township was surveyed and the land sold in 1843. The Rice-Tremonti Home, which still stands in Raytown today, was built on the Santa Fe Trail in 1844 by Archibald Rice and his family. William Ray established a blacksmith shop on the Santa Fe Trail in Jackson County in about 1848. In 1860, residents of Jackson County petitioned the county for a better road to connect southern Jackson County with Independence in northern Jackson County. -- Source: Wikipedia.com

New Yorkers all know Barney's, a men's fine clothing store. They moved to swanky quarters in Midtown a number of years ago but those of my generation remember the original store at 7th Avenue and 17th Street in Chelsea. That building stood vacant for a number of years but in time was transformed.

The space is now the Rubin Museum of Art, concentrating on the Himalayas and surrounding regions. It's breathtaking if you are interested in that sort of thing. Being old Nepal and Tibet hands (to give ourselves generous credit), we were sucked right in.

As best I understand, these images are not of the Buddha, although he is the foundation of the exhibits. The top photo is the protective goddess Tara. The second is of a Bodhisattva, a person who has achieved Enlightenment but chooses to be reborn, helping the rest of mankind along the path. The bottom one is probably a senior monk. It does not have the Buddha's characteristic hair-do and the big guy's ear lobes are much longer. The hand gestures are telling. The right hand is in the earth touching pose, calling on the earth itself to witness the truth of Buddha's teachings. The left hand makes a gesture of peaceful relaxation.

In any event, we think it's a don't miss. We plan to return when we are back in the NY area in July.

Back in Connecticut, her campaign tried to hold a huge rally for education reformers and... you guessed it, <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/CTConfidential/status/180005826235351040/photo/1/large">no one showed up.</a></p> <!--break--><!--break--><p>So again I ask: can you call yourself a grassroots organization if no one shows up to your events? The ad placed by <strong>Hardy Billington</strong> in support of the hateful legislation, HB 2051, the Don't Say Gay bill, in the Poplar Bluff <a href="http://info.darnews.com/"><em>Daily American Republic</em></a> is no exception:</p> <p class="rtecenter"><a href="http://joemygod.blogspot.com/2012/05/missouri-school-board-member-advertises.html"><img alt="" class="noside" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5343/7182884730_e01af30df3.jpg" style="width: 364px; height: 500px;" /></a></p> <p>Hardy Billington is a Baptist Deacon and state committeeman of the 25<sup>th</sup> Senatorial District as well as committeeman for the Butler County Republican Party, and until recently, Billington was also running for reelection to the Poplar Bluff School Board - more on that in a bit.</p> <p>Above all, Hardy Billington is a bigot.</p> <p>In his ad, he claims that "study after study reveals that homosexuality... can take anywhere from 10, 20 to 30 years off of someone's lifespan."  Common sense rates this as FALSE.  I know science is hard for some extremists, but bear with me: there is not one scientific study that shows being gay shortens your life by one single day, let alone 10, 20 or 30 years. The "studies" Billington is referencing all seem to come from religious based organizations that "estimate" but provide absolutely no scientific proof.  Here's the thing, just because you <em>say</em> something, that doesn't make it true.  Just because I say, "The sky is purple," does not, in fact, make the sky purple.  Just because you <em>say</em> being gay takes 30 years off the life of a person <em>does not make it a fact.</em></p> <p>Another outlandish lie Billington includes in his "ad" says the "gay lifestyle" kills people at a rate "2 to 3 times the rate of smoking."  Again, common sense rates this as FALSE, but I decided that science might have something to say on this too, and it does.  A quick glance at CDC fact sheets tells us this:</p> <p class="rteindent1"><strong><a href="http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/fast_facts/">Annual smoking related deaths: 443,000</a></strong></p> <p>Again, there's no scientific study that shows that over a million LGBT individuals are dying every year <em>just because they're gay</em>. Have any idea why? Because it's a patently false notion.</p> <p>As for Billington's advocacy of "tough love," that seems to me to be encouragement to bully individuals who identify as LGBT.  How Christian of him.  How loving.  Why, let's all bully people who happen to be different and see how that works out.  Maybe these deaths of LGBT youth aren't because they've engaged in some destructive behavior because of their "gay lifestyle." <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/22/gay-teen-suicides-a-hidden-problem_n_772707.html">Maybe, just maybe, there are increasing deaths of LGBT individuals because they've been bullied and take their own lives after they've been made to feel sub-human by the likes of Billington and his homophobic ilk</a>. </p> <p>Perhaps Billington should look to his Bible for guidance on how to approach people who happen to be different from him.  I'd suggest starting with Matthew 7:1:</p> <blockquote><p><a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+7%3A1&version=NIV"><span class="text Matt-7-1"><span class="woj">“Do not judge, or you too will be judged."</span></span></a></p> </blockquote> <p>From there, I suggest that Billington head to Leviticus 18:19:</p> <blockquote><p><a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Leviticus+19%3A18&version=ESV"><span class="text Lev-19-18" id="en-ESV-3300">"You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the <span class="small-caps" style="font-variant: small-caps">Lord</span>."</span></a></p> </blockquote> <p>I digress.</p> <p>With regards to Billington's race for reelection to the Poplar Bluff School Board, there is some good news: <a href="http://semotimes.com/8211">on April 3, 2012, Billington lost.  Not only did Billington lose, but he came in dead last.</a>  I'm very happy to report that Hardy Billington will not have a place in school leadership from which to bully LGBT youth and individuals.  Kudos to the citizens of Poplar Bluff for refusing to give him an opportunity to foist his hate-filled ideas on the populace.  <a href="http://info.darnews.com/contact.html">Now if only the Poplar Bluff <em>Daily American Republic</em> would also refuse to give him a platform for his hate.</a></p> <p><em><strong><a href="http://joemygod.blogspot.com/2012/05/missouri-school-board-member-advertises.html">(H/T: Joe. I was in meetings all day long yesterday and out to dinner with colleagues last night. Just had time to sneak in some shots at the city's Reading Terminal Market as it was closing for the day.

One of the highlights of local cuisine is the cheesesteak sandwich. Check the link for a description. Mmm, way-overcooked beef, onions and Cheez Whiz on a long roll. Not endorsed by the American Heart Association.

The price of a glass of wine in the hotel is exorbitant so I stopped in a store to buy a bottle for the room. The cashier asked what I was doing with the big camera around my neck so I explained. After I said something about St. Louis he remarked in a bitter way that "Philadelphia is a mean and beastly place." I asked him what he meant. He replied that "it's hard to make a buck here," that the taxes and city fees were high and the opportunities limited. Okay. I've enjoyed visiting this city in the past. Maybe I should look more carefully.

So welcome to the so-called City Of Brotherly Love. That's a lot of hooey. Philadelphia sports fans are renowned for booing the other team, as well as their own players if they don't meet expectations. On the way in from the airport I saw a billboard that said "Boo Anyone You Want To." The sign was apparently promoting part of the U. S. Constitution.

There is only one place where I could have taken this, the Mansion House apartments directly across from the Arch and the park it sits in. Sharon, of Phoenix Daily Photo, lived there when she was working in STL. I've only been inside once, when some friends had serious water damage at home and the insurance company put them up in this building. (Note: if any readers live in or have access to a Mansion House apartment, please please invite me over for tea). Also no way to tell what camera I used. It was probably an early point-n-shoot. I got my first DSLR, a Canon 10D, in 2003. The image looks like a century-old color postcard. Not so bad.

The space is now the Rubin Museum of Art, concentrating on the Himalayas and surrounding regions. It's breathtaking if you are interested in that sort of thing. Being old Nepal and Tibet hands (to give ourselves generous credit), we were sucked right in.

As best I understand, these images are not of the Buddha, although he is the foundation of the exhibits. The top photo is the protective goddess Tara. The second is of a Bodhisattva, a person who has achieved Enlightenment but chooses to be reborn, helping the rest of mankind along the path. The bottom one is probably a senior monk. It does not have the Buddha's characteristic hair-do and the big guy's ear lobes are much longer. The hand gestures are telling. The right hand is in the earth touching pose, calling on the earth itself to witness the truth of Buddha's teachings. The left hand makes a gesture of peaceful relaxation.

In any event, we think it's a don't miss. We plan to return when we are back in the NY area in July.

The ad placed by <strong>Hardy Billington</strong> in support of the hateful legislation, HB 2051, the Don't Say Gay bill, in the Poplar Bluff <a href="http://info.darnews.com/"><em>Daily American Republic</em></a> is no exception:</p> <p class="rtecenter"><a href="http://joemygod.blogspot.com/2012/05/missouri-school-board-member-advertises.html"><img alt="" class="noside" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5343/7182884730_e01af30df3.jpg" style="width: 364px; height: 500px;" /></a></p> <p>Hardy Billington is a Baptist Deacon and state committeeman of the 25<sup>th</sup> Senatorial District as well as committeeman for the Butler County Republican Party, and until recently, Billington was also running for reelection to the Poplar Bluff School Board - more on that in a bit.</p> <p>Above all, Hardy Billington is a bigot.</p> <p>In his ad, he claims that "study after study reveals that homosexuality... can take anywhere from 10, 20 to 30 years off of someone's lifespan."  Common sense rates this as FALSE.  I know science is hard for some extremists, but bear with me: there is not one scientific study that shows being gay shortens your life by one single day, let alone 10, 20 or 30 years. The "studies" Billington is referencing all seem to come from religious based organizations that "estimate" but provide absolutely no scientific proof.  Here's the thing, just because you <em>say</em> something, that doesn't make it true.  Just because I say, "The sky is purple," does not, in fact, make the sky purple.  Just because you <em>say</em> being gay takes 30 years off the life of a person <em>does not make it a fact.</em></p> <p>Another outlandish lie Billington includes in his "ad" says the "gay lifestyle" kills people at a rate "2 to 3 times the rate of smoking."  Again, common sense rates this as FALSE, but I decided that science might have something to say on this too, and it does.  A quick glance at CDC fact sheets tells us this:</p> <p class="rteindent1"><strong><a href="http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/fast_facts/">Annual smoking related deaths: 443,000</a></strong></p> <p>Again, there's no scientific study that shows that over a million LGBT individuals are dying every year <em>just because they're gay</em>. Have any idea why? Because it's a patently false notion.</p> <p>As for Billington's advocacy of "tough love," that seems to me to be encouragement to bully individuals who identify as LGBT.  How Christian of him.  How loving.  Why, let's all bully people who happen to be different and see how that works out.  Maybe these deaths of LGBT youth aren't because they've engaged in some destructive behavior because of their "gay lifestyle." <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/22/gay-teen-suicides-a-hidden-problem_n_772707.html">Maybe, just maybe, there are increasing deaths of LGBT individuals because they've been bullied and take their own lives after they've been made to feel sub-human by the likes of Billington and his homophobic ilk</a>. </p> <p>Perhaps Billington should look to his Bible for guidance on how to approach people who happen to be different from him.  I'd suggest starting with Matthew 7:1:</p> <blockquote><p><a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+7%3A1&version=NIV"><span class="text Matt-7-1"><span class="woj">“Do not judge, or you too will be judged."</span></span></a></p> </blockquote> <p>From there, I suggest that Billington head to Leviticus 18:19:</p> <blockquote><p><a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Leviticus+19%3A18&version=ESV"><span class="text Lev-19-18" id="en-ESV-3300">"You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the <span class="small-caps" style="font-variant: small-caps">Lord</span>."</span></a></p> </blockquote> <p>I digress.</p> <p>With regards to Billington's race for reelection to the Poplar Bluff School Board, there is some good news: <a href="http://semotimes.com/8211">on April 3, 2012, Billington lost.  Not only did Billington lose, but he came in dead last.</a>  I'm very happy to report that Hardy Billington will not have a place in school leadership from which to bully LGBT youth and individuals.  Kudos to the citizens of Poplar Bluff for refusing to give him an opportunity to foist his hate-filled ideas on the populace.  <a href="http://info.darnews.com/contact.html">Now if only the Poplar Bluff <em>Daily American Republic</em> would also refuse to give him a platform for his hate.</a></p> <p><em><strong><a href="http://joemygod.blogspot.com/2012/05/missouri-school-board-member-advertises.html">(H/T: Joe. The price of a glass of wine in the hotel is exorbitant so I stopped in a store to buy a bottle for the room. The cashier asked what I was doing with the big camera around my neck so I explained. After I said something about St. Louis he remarked in a bitter way that "Philadelphia is a mean and beastly place." I asked him what he meant. He replied that "it's hard to make a buck here," that the taxes and city fees were high and the opportunities limited. Okay. I've enjoyed visiting this city in the past. Maybe I should look more carefully.

Philadelphia sports fans are renowned for booing the other team, as well as their own players if they don't meet expectations. On the way in from the airport I saw a billboard that said "Boo Anyone You Want To." The sign was apparently promoting part of the U. S. Constitution.

An organization called <a href="http://www.usfirst.org/">First Robotics</a> seems to have made St. Louis its home for the championship competition. It takes place on the floor of our cavernous domed football stadium. It was a very busy week at work and lots to finish this weekend. There's something to shoot today, the finals of the U.S. high school robotics championship in the football dome. Think radio-controlled, stripped-down versions of R2D2 shooting baskets, operated by Junior Geeks of America (actually very bright young people). Off to Philadelphia on Monday for a conference for my arcane legal specialty, followed by a weekend in my home town, New York City. Yes
