There were 9,191 housing units at an average density of 573.3/km² (1,485.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 44.75% White, 52.41% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.67% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 1.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.02% of the population. There were 8,612 households out of which 36.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.9% were married couples living together, 25.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
