The Orleans Public Defenders (OPD) office today filed a motion for a preliminary injunction against Sheriff Marlin Gusman and the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office (OPSO) demanding "immediate constitutionally compliant access to clients" detained in the parish jail system.
Since filing a lawsuit last fall claiming a lack of privacy, restrictive visiting hours and lack of facilities that would allow attorneys and clients to view court documents together in OPSO controlled facilities, " not only have visitation conditions not improved, attorneys say they have actually worsened" says an OPD press release.…

The nice weather last weekend inspired a lot of picnics along Bayou St. John, and it was clear by the way people were huddled around tables out there on the grassy banks that many of them involved crawfish. Next week, on Saturday, March 31, a community crawfish boil will double as a fundraiser for a project aimed at fixing up an important symbol of the bayou itself.…

New Orleans was braced for the NFL to lay down major penalties in the Saints bounty case — but no one saw this coming:
Saints head coach Sean Payton was suspended without pay for the entire 2012 season. General manager Mickey Loomis is also suspended without pay for the first eight regular-season games of the 2012 season. New Orleans Firefighters Association president Nick Felton is asking the New Orleans Civil Service Commission (CSC) for ruling that would put to a stop the city's past practice of ordering New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) full-time personnel or temporary workers from setting up and working sidewalk barricades during Mardi Gras season.
