As of the census of 2000, there were 7,511 people, 3,160 households, and 2,110 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,032.0/km² (2,668.7/mi²). There were 3,330 housing units at an average density of 457.6/km² (1,183.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 88.18% White, 8.67% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.34% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.29% of the population. There were 3,160 households out of which 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% were married couples living together, 14.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
