As of the census of 2000, there were 10,349 people, 4,358 households, and 2,667 families residing in the city. The population density was 598.2/km² (1,549.8/mi²). There were 4,907 housing units at an average density of 283.6/km² (734.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 80.57% White, 13.31% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 3.48% from other races, and 2.07% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.86% of the population. There were 4,358 households out of which 26.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.4% were married couples living together, 15.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.8% were non-families. 35.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
