As of the census of 2000, there were 8,744 people, 3,905 households, and 2,456 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 863.4/km² (2,238.0/mi²). There were 4,108 housing units at an average density of 405.7/km² (1,051.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.30% White, 0.78% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.67% Asian, 0.47% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.92% of the population. There were 3,905 households out of which 21.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% were married couples living together, 7.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.1% were non-families. 32.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
