As of the census of 2000, there were 12,921 people, 5,195 households, and 3,470 families residing in the town. The population density was 146.5/km² (379.4/mi²). There were 5,417 housing units at an average density of 61.4/km² (159.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.23% White, 0.99% African American, 0.16% Native American, 1.29% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.40% of the population. There were 5,195 households out of which 32.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.4% were married couples living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 26.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
