There were 3,717 housing units at an average density of 162.3/km² (420.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 84.67% White, 14.44% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.16% from other races, and 0.38% from two or more races. 0.28% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 3,570 households out of which 37.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.7% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.5% were non-families. 17.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
